Biography: | Biography of Sid Sackson by Bernice Sackson
Sid Sackson was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1920. He lived for a short while in Gary, Indiana, then in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and finally settled in New York City where he lives now. Sid enjoyed playing games, especially with his father. At the age of eight, Sid Sackson invented a pencil and paper war game that eventually became Acquire.
As a teenager, Sid won awards for his ballroom dancing and especially, for his mastery of the shag. He was an editor of his high school's newspaper.
Sid graduated Magna Cum Laude from the City College (New York City, N.Y.), earning his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and was offered a graduate fellowship.
Sid has a wife, Bernice, two children, 2 grandchildren, and a step- granddaughter.
In the 1960's, 3M (Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing) decided to publish a series of bookshelf games. Thanks to the efforts of Sid's agent, Felicia Parker, the 3M line included Sid's most popular game, Acquire, as well as Bazaar, Monad, Venture, Sleuth and Executive Decision. The marketing effort for these games included a publicity tour by Sid across the East Coast of the United States and as far west as Chicago.
Sid wrote A Gamut of Games before retiring from Civil Engineering and Traffic Engineering. From 1966 through the early seventies he and Bernice took several trips to Europe to sightsee and visit game friends. Sid, of course, returned home with suitcases crammed with games purchased from shops across Europe.
In 1970 Sid began working at home as a full time game inventor, collector and author. He routinely worked 60 hour per week and authored six more game books.
By 1979, Can't Stop published by Parker Brothers became quite popular. But Parker Brothers decided to concentrate on its electronic games and suspended publication of Can't Stop
Sid Sackson has received many honors. Focus was named Game of the Year in 1981 and was featured in the Game Show in London as well. His book "A Gamut of Games" was translated into several languages and won Der Goldene Poppel Award in 1987 in Germany. Sid was guest of honor at the Essener Spieltage 1989.
Sid's game creations number several hundred. Well over fifty have been published throughout the world. Today, Sid Sackson goes dancing whenever possible, but his true love will always be games.
